What I liked

The amount of flexibility I had and the resources available for me to use.

What I wish was different

A little more structure and guidance from my mentor at the beginning would've been nice.

Advice

Go out and talk to people. Shoot them a message on LinkedIn and grab coffee. It will probably be the most valuable thing you leave with.

Explore Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Seattle is a gorgeous city — beaches, mountains, forests, lakes, etc. — and I got to explore so much of it! I also learned so much doing software engineering and product management at Microsoft, and really valued the ability to explore both areas as a way to narrow down what I want to do in the future.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I loved that they gave us projects that were relevant to what the team needed. Higher level managements and contributors were very accessible and friendly. Lots of monetary benefits, obviously. My team was amazing and super helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more interns specifically on my team, since it would have been more likely that I would have worked with someone in my age group.

Advice

Make sure to ask for help as often as you need it, it's the only way you'll succeed here.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

A ton of social events for interns to get to know each other. This was very beneficial for those who would be returning for full time and were not from the area. Due to this, these individuals have plenty of friends to come back to following their last year of classes.

Supply Chain Planner Intern

May - August 2020 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Microsoft did a great job transitioning to the virtual environment while also providing an internship experience full of growing my knowledge in supply chain and expanding my connections. Being able to have a designated mentor throughout the internship was very valuable and the opportunities Microsoft provided to meet other interns/team members were appreciated.

What I wish was different

Only thing I wish had been different was completing the internship in person (obviously, this was not possible due to the COVID pandemic, but still very grateful I had the opportunity to intern at a company like Microsoft).

Advice

One piece of advice I'd share about this experience is to manage your time properly throughout your internship. Allocate your time wisely between your projects and networking meetings because 12 weeks comes quicker than you would imagine.
